Georgia Voices Concern Over Russian Naval Base Plans in Abkhazia
The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, has raised alarm over Russia’s alleged construction of a naval base in the breakaway region of Abkhazia. Zourabichvili emphasized the security implications of this move for the entire Black Sea region during a press conference in Tbilisi.
She criticized Russia’s decision and accused Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of failing to implement an effective policy towards the breakaway regions. Zourabichvili also called for the residents of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to be granted Georgian citizenship.
In 2008, a conflict between Georgia and Russia resulted in the loss of control over Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia later recognized these regions as independent states, leading to diplomatic tensions with Georgia. Recently, a deal was signed for a Black Sea Fleet naval facility in Abkhazia.
US Aid Pause Over ‘Foreign Influence’ Law
Zourabichvili also addressed the US’ decision to pause $95 million in aid to Georgia following the enactment of the controversial “foreign influence” law. This law requires organizations receiving over 20% of their funding from foreign sources to register with the state, causing criticism and support within the country.
Despite understanding Washington’s reaction, Zourabichvili questioned the restriction of aid and called for a reevaluation of the government in the upcoming elections to strengthen ties with the West.
