A former Russian military official, Vladimir Demchik, was arrested on bribery charges for accepting 4 million rubles ($46,700) in bribes from a clothing company CEO in 2017. Demchik, a reserve forces colonel who oversaw the defense ministry’s clothing department, faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.
According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the clothing company secured 26 government contracts worth 574 million rubles ($6.7 million) to supply the military between 2017 and 2018. Demchik’s responsibility included ensuring supplies of ceremonial uniforms and footwear for the Russian military.
Following a series of corruption scandals in the Russian Defense Ministry, Demchik’s arrest is part of a larger military purge. The Investigative Committee plans to seek the arrest of the clothing company CEO involved in the bribery. The crackdown on corruption is aimed at restoring integrity within the military ranks.
