A concern has been raised by 67 members of the European Parliament regarding Hungary’s decision to ease visa requirements for Russians and Belarusians, potentially posing security threats to the Schengen area. Led by Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius and Czech MEP Danuše Nerudová, the letter addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, criticizes Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán’s actions.
The MEPs highlighted the risks of allowing non-European citizens to move freely within the Schengen area without proper authorization, potentially strengthening the Russian spy network within the EU. They called for the Commission and EU representatives to take measures to protect European citizens, including new controls at Hungarian borders if necessary.
