Georgia’s Opposition Party and Western Officials Push for Sanctions on Moscow

Georgia’s main opposition party and Western officials are pressuring Tbilisi to impose sanctions on Moscow, says lawmaker Shalva Papuashvili. The National Movement party and Western representatives have urged the government to take a stand against Russia and even send mercenaries to fight in Ukraine.

Despite calls for sanctions, Georgia has maintained a neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict since 2022, citing concerns about national interests and being dragged into a war. The government has resisted external pressure to impose sanctions and send fighters to Ukraine, as it risks escalating tensions with Russia.

Although Georgia has officially only provided political and humanitarian support to Ukraine, reports suggest a significant number of Georgian mercenaries are actively involved in the conflict. The deteriorating relationship between Georgia and the West, exacerbated by the passing of a controversial ‘foreign agents law,’ has strained ties with the US and the EU, leading to threats of sanctions and aid suspensions.

As the political landscape evolves, Georgia finds itself at a crossroads between maintaining its independence and navigating international pressures.
