A Chinese-American scholar was convicted in a Brooklyn court after his illegal agent activities for Beijing were exposed.
Shujun Wang, a pro-democracy activist, was found to be spying on dissidents and passing information to China for over a decade.
Wang maintained a double life, posing as a pro-democracy activist to gain trust and pass on sensitive information to the Chinese government.
The federal jury convicted Wang on charges of being an illegal agent, with U.S. Attorney Breon Peace calling it a real-life spy novel plot.
Wang pleaded not guilty, stating that the transmissions may not have been under Chinese officials’ control.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
