#ChangeNow: The name behind protests is The Foreigner

The last 10 days of July witnessed compelling events involving the youth of East Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed frustration with the Gen Z movement after previously conceding to their demands by rejecting the Finance Bill that sparked protests. He formed a new cabinet of “national unity,” including opposition figures, framing the economic crisis as a political power-sharing issue.

In Uganda, the Afrika Mashariki Fest launched an annual Julius Nyerere Pilgrimage to Butiama to commemorate Tanzania’s founder and revitalize the East African Community. Tanzanian High Commissioner to Kampala, Major General Paul Simuli Kisesa, co-hosted the event, emphasizing economic emancipation.

Additionally, youth activists in Kampala protested against corruption in the Legislature, leading to arrests. The week also marked the activation of the Comesa-EAC-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation.

As Africa faces global trade challenges, leaders must engage the youth to drive industrialization and economic growth. The TFTA offers a platform for market expansion and job creation, urging leaders to support lawful youth movements against corruption to prevent external influences.
