Following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amidst protests, an interim government is to be established in Bangladesh, as announced by army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman. The confirmation came through a national broadcast on state television, putting an end to speculations that had circulated earlier.
“We will form an interim government,” affirmed the army chief, hinting towards a transitional phase for the country. Expressing hopes for the situation to improve, Zaman also mentioned that there may not be a need for a state of emergency.
Hasina, who began her fourth consecutive term as prime minister in January, stepped down after her ruling party, the Bangladesh Awami League, secured a significant victory in the parliamentary elections. At 76, she leaves behind a political legacy that has shaped the country’s governance for years.
