Bangladesh’s Parliament Dissolved After Prime Minister Resigns Amid Protests
Following violent protests demanding her removal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country, prompting the dissolution of Bangladesh’s parliament, as announced by the president’s office on Tuesday.
Student leaders had set a deadline for the dissolution of parliament and threatened further action if their demands were not met. Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman revealed that Hasina had resigned and that a caretaker government would be formed by the military.
Accused of electoral fraud, Hasina faced widespread public outcry and millions of people took to the streets demanding her resignation. President Mohammed Shahabuddin later announced the release of arrested protesters and opposition leader Khaleda Zia, who had been under house arrest.
Call for Nobel Laureate Yunus to Lead Interim Government
Following Hasina’s ousting, student protesters advocated for Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead the interim government. The economist, known for his microfinance initiatives, was suggested as an advisor due to his international reputation and impact on poverty reduction.
