The recent crackdown on corrupt senior officials in the Russian military has sent shockwaves through the country. Former head of the Military Construction Branch, Sergei Sukhov, was arrested for fraud, allegedly pocketing millions in bribes. Major General Vladimir Shesterov was also arrested for embezzling funds from the operation of the “Patriot Park”. The park, overseen by former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, has become a focal point of corruption investigations.
Colonel Vyacheslav Akhmedov and others were detained in connection with Shesterov’s arrest. The net widened when Vladimir Demchik, a retired reserve colonel, was arrested for accepting a bribe from a company awarded multiple government contracts for military equipment.
The purge of officials suspected of corruption is believed to be a power play within the Russian security structure, with President Putin allegedly sanctioning the crackdown. As high-ranking officials continue to face charges, the fallout from this corruption scandal could have far-reaching consequences for the Russian military.
