US Urges Calm and Restraint in Bangladesh Amid Prime Minister’s Departure

The United States has called for “calm” and “restraint” in Bangladesh following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country amidst violent nationwide protests. The State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, stated that the US stands with the people of Bangladesh and urges all parties to refrain from further violence.
Miller emphasized the need for a peaceful transition of power in accordance with Bangladesh’s laws. The US is deeply saddened by the reports of human rights abuses, deaths, and injuries during the recent weeks of protests. The Bangladeshi people have the right to peacefully assemble, and the US opposes any violent crackdown on protesters.
General Waker-uz-Zaman of the Bangladesh military announced plans for a transitional government after the Prime Minister’s departure. The protests, which began in July calling for the abolition of quotas in government jobs, escalated to demanding Hasina’s resignation.
Hundreds of people were killed and wounded during the protests, prompting the urgent call for calm and restraint in the country.
