Sheikh Hasina arrives at Hindon near Delhi after leaving country

Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, arrived at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base at Hindon near New Delhi, but the Indian government has not disclosed the length of her stay. Speculation suggests she may continue her journey to Finland or the United Kingdom. This visit contrasts with her previous stay in New Delhi after the assassination of her father in 1975, where she sought refuge for six years under the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

This time, the Indian government is cautious about hosting Hasina for an extended period to avoid fueling anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh. Security officials greeted her upon arrival, and discussions with Indian officials, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, followed. The Cabinet Committee of Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assessed the situation in Bangladesh and its implications for India-Bangladesh relations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar may address Parliament on the evolving situation in Bangladesh. Hasina’s departure from Dhaka coincided with protests against her government’s policies, highlighting the delicate political climate. The Modi government aims to facilitate her transit to the UK or Finland, acknowledging her positive contribution to bilateral relations.
