SC stops Missouri’s bid to lift Trump hush-money gag in 80 chars

The Supreme Court rejected Missouri’s attempt to lift a gag order in Donald Trump’s hush-money case and delay his sentencing in New York. Missouri’s attorney general sought to sue New York but was denied by the justices. Justices Thomas and Alito would have allowed a suit to proceed but not to lift the gag order or delay sentencing.

Trump’s attorney argued that the gag order limited his ability to campaign freely. New York contended that the order allowed Trump to discuss key issues and his sentence may not affect his movements. The case was framed as a conflict between states, but New York argued that the Supreme Court should not intervene in ongoing state court proceedings.

Trump is under a gag order stemming from his conviction on charges related to hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels. His sentencing has been postponed until September. Trump is seeking to have the conviction overturned based on a Supreme Court ruling granting him immunity from prosecution as a former president.

The Supreme Court has previously rejected similar suits involving state conflicts, including those related to the 2020 election results.
