Remembering the legendary commander Izet Nanić of the 505th Knight Brigade of the Fifth Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who passed away 29 years ago today. Born in Nanića Dolina in 1965, Nanić played a pivotal role in the Bosnian War as a brave and dedicated soldier.
After leaving the Yugoslavian National Army at the start of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nanić became a founding member and the first commander of the Bužim Territorial Defense Headquarters. He later led the 505th Bužim Knights Brigade until his untimely death in Operation Storm in 1995.
Despite facing challenges, Nanić’s bravery and leadership shone through as he fought alongside his comrades to defend and protect his homeland. A monument now stands in his honor near Bužim, where an annual event called the “Freedom Days of Knight Bužim” is held.
Nanić’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, with Bužim symbolizing the strength and courage of the 505th Knights Brigade during the war. Though he did not live to see the final victory, Nanić’s sacrifice and dedication will always be remembered.
