The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Oman recently released its Annual Health Report for the year 2023, offering valuable insights into the country’s healthcare system. The report showcases key health trends and developments, highlighting significant achievements and areas for improvement.

In 2023, hospital admissions saw a rise of 2.6%, totaling over 302,000 admissions, with an average stay of 3.5 days per patient. Outpatient clinic visits also increased by 2.7% to 15.3 million, demonstrating a growing demand for healthcare services.

The report revealed a total of 86,955 surgical procedures conducted, including organ transplants such as liver, kidney, and cornea transplants. Despite a decline in crude birth rate and infant mortality, Oman witnessed an increase in maternal mortality.

Improvements in healthcare services and infrastructure have led to a rise in life expectancy to 78.3 years. The MoH emphasized collaboration with both government and private sectors to enhance the health system and policies, ensuring integrated healthcare services.

MoH’s proactive measures to combat infectious diseases have shown promising results, with a notable decrease in measles cases. However, the increase in dengue fever cases underscores the need for continued efforts in disease control and prevention.

The workforce expansion in the healthcare sector, with a focus on professional development and training, reflects MoH’s commitment to providing quality care. The Omanisation rate of 71% signifies efforts to empower local talent in the medical field.
