Mali cuts diplomatic ties with Ukraine

The transitional government of Mali has decided to sever diplomatic ties with Ukraine due to allegations of Ukrainian support for Tuareg-led rebels. This decision comes after reports of significant battle losses suffered by Malian soldiers and Wagner Group mercenaries in clashes with anti-government groups in northern Mali. Andrii Yusov, Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson, suggested possible cooperation between Ukrainian intelligence services and the Mali rebels during a television broadcast.

Mali’s government spokesperson, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, condemned Ukraine’s alleged involvement in supporting armed terrorist groups, prompting the immediate termination of diplomatic relations. The influence of Russian mercenaries, particularly the Wagner Group, in Mali has been a concern, with accusations of war crimes and looting. The French news outlet Le Monde reported Ukrainian special services collaborating with Tuareg-led fighters in training and operations.

As Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba embarks on a regional tour of African nations, including Mali, this diplomatic fallout highlights the complexities of international relations and the impact of foreign involvement in conflicts. Sweden has also announced plans to withdraw aid to Mali over its stance towards Russia, further complicating the situation.\
