Former Oyo State Governor To Receive Ceremonial Beaded Crown
High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, former governor of Oyo State and Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, will receive a ceremonial beaded crown this week, according to palace sources. The decision marks a reversal as Ladoja had previously insisted on wearing only the Olubadan crown.
The controversy surrounding the beaded crowns for high chiefs began during the tenure of late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, facing opposition from the Olubadan of Ibadanland and Ladoja. Governor Seyi Makinde reopened the issue, leading to a new law amendment in the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.
Ladoja’s acceptance of the crown came after pressure from Ibadan indigenes. He emphasized that the decision does not make him an Oba, attributing it to the influence of both indigenes and non-indigenes.
This development comes amidst delays in confirming the next Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, following a series of legal challenges and political interventions. The acceptance of the beaded crown by Ladoja is seen as a significant step towards resolving the longstanding chieftaincy dispute in Ibadanland.
