Japan Considers Expanding Access to Approved Abortion Pill
The Health Ministry in Japan is exploring the possibility of expanding access to the country’s first approved abortion pill, the Mefeego pill pack. Currently, the medication can only be administered in hospitals with inpatient capabilities. However, following a successful national survey showing no severe complications, the ministry is considering allowing outpatient clinics with 24-hour care to use the pill.
The Mefeego pill pack, developed by Linepharma, is an oral medication for terminating pregnancies up to nine weeks. While some countries allow at-home use of the pill, Japan’s current policy requires patients to stay in the hospital until the abortion is complete.
With a new proposal to allow patients to go home after taking the pill, as long as they can return for a follow-up within a week, the ministry aims to provide more non-surgical options and equal access to abortion care nationwide.
By expanding access to this medication, Japan hopes to offer more choices and ensure that all individuals have access to safe and effective abortion care.
