Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reportedly fled to India on Monday, with the offer of safe passage from its government.
Bangladesh army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman took full responsibility after Hasina’s ousting and escape. In a televised broadcast, the career infantry officer, bedecked with medals, announced that a new interim government would be formed. Promising to address injustices and stop violence, he emphasized the need for a peaceful transition.
The 57-year-old Waker, a UN peacekeeper with a military background, called for an end to deadly protests and appealed for unity to build a better future. With a long history in the military, he aims to stabilize the country and facilitate a smooth transition of power.
As Bangladesh faces political turmoil and uncertainty, the role of the army takes center stage in restoring calm and moving towards a peaceful resolution.
