Argentina’s Sanctioning of Hamas Explained

Argentina’s Sanctioning of Hamas Explained

Argentina’s new president, Javier Milei, has declared Hamas as an “international terrorist group” on 12 July. This decision follows a trend started by the previous administration of Mauricio Macri, and was announced before commemorations of the 1994 terrorist attack on the Argentine Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA).

The attack, the deadliest in Argentina’s history, remains unsolved, with Hezbollah suspected of carrying it out on Iran’s request. Milei’s designation of Hamas was made possible by Decree 489/2019, establishing the Public Registry of People and Entities Linked to Acts and Financing of Terrorism (RePET), aligning Argentina with policies of other Global North countries.

These actions, despite Hamas not being associated with attacks in Argentina, are part of a realignment towards the US. Milei’s political ideology and personal leadership influence Argentina’s foreign policy, notably seen in the staunch support for Israel. The sanctioning of Hamas serves to securitize the group, despite no direct connection to past attacks in Argentina.
