Amnesty International labels torture, sexual violence as ‘war crime’ against Palestinian detainees

Amnesty International has condemned Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees at Sde Teiman Prison in southern Israel as “war crimes,” citing torture and sexual violence. Sara Hashash, deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, stated that the organization’s research documented the harrowing abuse suffered by Palestinian detainees at this facility.

Interviews with 27 former detainees revealed instances of torture, cruel treatment, and sexual violence by Israeli forces. Hashash emphasized the need for an independent investigation to hold perpetrators accountable.

She urged the International Criminal Court to investigate these allegations, as Israeli authorities have failed to address them adequately. The international community must demand immediate access for independent monitors to assess detention conditions.

The situation has garnered global attention, with media reports of Israeli soldiers accused of sexually assaulting Palestinian detainees. Reports indicate a pattern of abuse and torture at Sde Teiman Prison, resulting in numerous deaths.
