Wayanad, already facing the aftermath of a disaster, is now dealing with a new threat as thieves pretending to be volunteers are stealing valuables from abandoned homes. To combat this issue, police have established six anti-theft squads to monitor the area closely.
The government has taken steps to prevent further thefts by requiring all outsiders, especially those claiming to be volunteers, to register before entering the landslide-affected sites. This move aims to control unauthorized access to the vulnerable regions.
Following the recent landslides, residents of Chooralmala and Mundakkai villages were relocated to safer locations, leaving their homes unguarded. These vacant houses have become prime targets for thieves, who have also targeted properties near crucial infrastructure like the Bailey bridge.
