The Untold Story of Israeli Soldiers: Sacrifice and Uncertainty
No less than 10,000 soldiers were killed or wounded during the long months of fighting in the Gaza Strip. The Defense Ministry revealed that every month about 1,000 new soldiers join the ranks of the physically and mentally wounded, yet legislation has been postponed by the Knesset and the government, leaving soldiers in a state of confusion.
Combat soldiers currently serve for 32 months, and a recent proposal to extend their service has caused frustration among those expecting to be discharged soon. Whether to plan for post-army travels, further education, or finding a job, these soldiers are left with uncertain futures.
Despite promises of favorable economic conditions, the extended service will cost taxpayers about a billion shekels annually. Without finalizing the service extension law, soldiers remain in limbo, unsure of their fate on the battlefield or as civilians in Israel.
It’s time for the Knesset to convene, make decisions, and provide clarity to these brave soldiers who have sacrificed so much.
