The Chairperson of Defense of Human Rights (DHR), Amna Masood Janjua, has called for the government to prioritize the safe return of missing persons over financial compensation. In response to the government’s announcement of financial aid packages for families of missing persons, Janjua criticized the measures as inadequate, highlighting the underlying issue of enforced disappearances.
The government’s Rs5 million aid package per family aims to support legal battles against enforced disappearances and provide financial assistance. However, Janjua emphasized that financial aid alone does not address the core problem. She demanded accountability, justice, and the safe return of missing persons.
With the formation of committees to assist in recovering missing persons, Janjua stressed the need for transparency and greater involvement of family members. She also proposed the establishment of a ‘Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ to address deeper issues surrounding enforced disappearances.
The ongoing struggle for justice underscores the need for a more comprehensive and transparent approach from the government. Janjua’s call for action aims to bring about lasting change in resolving the issue of enforced disappearances.\
