Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged for peace amidst violent protests over government policies and the cost of living crisis. Rights group Amnesty International reported at least 13 deaths on Thursday’s protests, accusing security forces of brutality. Tinubu made a televised plea for protestors to halt and engage in dialogue to end the bloodshed.
The protests, sparked by economic hardship, have gripped the nation with demands for policy changes. Despite Tinubu’s call for calm, organizers indicated that they would continue their demonstrations. Tinubu defended his government’s measures to revive the economy, which have led to soaring food prices.
The protest movement #EndbadGovernanceinNigeria has gained momentum online, pushing for reductions in fuel prices and addressing the cost of living crisis. However, authorities warned against emulating protests in Kenya. Despite arrests by the police, activists remain resolute to continue protesting, emphasizing the need for change.
