Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi Protests Against IPP Agreements and Tax Regime
The Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi chapter staged a sit-in outside the Sindh Governor House demanding the cancellation of agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) and a revision of the tax regime that burdens the salaried class. The protest also highlighted Karachi-specific issues, including the cancellation of the agreement with K-Electric and transparency in city development spending.
Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi chief Munem Zafar addressed the protest, calling for the withdrawal of excessive taxes and unjust agreements with IPPs. He criticized the government for misleading the nation on capacity charges for IPPs and called for a rationalization of the tax regime to alleviate the burden on the salaried class and traders.
The protest, attended by a large number of individuals, aimed to show solidarity with a larger protest in Rawalpindi. The JI emphasized the need for transparency in government spending and expressed concerns about the misuse of funds meant for city infrastructure development.
This protest signifies the JI’s commitment to advocating for fair taxation policies and holding government officials accountable for their actions.
