After being released from detainment in Russia, three Americans were warmly welcomed back to the US, reuniting with their families at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The emotional reunions marked the end of months or even years of separation.
The former detainees included Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan, and Russian American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva. Each faced different circumstances during their detainment, including espionage charges and false information accusations.
Having been part of a historic prisoner exchange involving 24 detainees, the Americans were flown to San Antonio, Texas for medical evaluations and further care as necessary. However, the road to recovery post-release can be challenging, with mental health struggles, financial burdens, and reintegration issues.
