Former State Duma lawmaker turned opposition figure Ilya Ponomaryov survived an assassination attempt in a drone strike at his home outside Kyiv, Ukraine. This marked the fifth time he has dodged attempts on his life, according to his statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Ponomaryov, known for his opposition to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, went into exile in 2016 and has been calling for the violent overthrow of President Vladimir Putin since the invasion of Ukraine.
Photos of Ponomaryov covered in blood were published by Ukrainian news website Obozrevatel, reporting that his home was targeted by three drones. While air defense systems prevented major damage in previous attempts, this latest attack occurred dangerously close to his residence.
Fortunately, Ponomaryov is safe and under protection now. Ukrainian military officials confirmed injuries from drone debris in the area following Russian strikes.
