Cheers to Their Memory: Shenkar College Project & Exhibit

Every year, on October 7, civilians and soldiers who lost their lives in war are honored through the brewing of special beers. Beer has become a symbol of remembrance due to its association with youth culture and the fallen soldiers’ love for the beverage. The act of raising a glass and toasting “l’chaim!” and “to memories” further solidifies beer as a vehicle for commemoration.

At Shenkar College of Engineering in Tel Aviv, students were tasked with designing beer labels in memory of the fallen. Through research and creative expression, each student captured the essence of their chosen individual on a beer label. The families of the fallen reacted with emotion and appreciation upon seeing the final designs.

From honoring a Navy medic with a guitar symbol to symbolizing bravery through a jigsaw puzzle tattoo, each label told a unique story. The exhibition of these beer label designs not only commemorated the fallen but also provided a space for healing and collective memory.

Through the art of beer label design, these students paid tribute to the lives and legacies of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
