Condolences and Condemnations: AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat Reacts to Terror Attack in Somalia
The Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed his shock and condemnation of a devastating terror attack that occurred at Liido Beach in Mogadishu, Somalia. The attack, which resulted in the loss of at least 32 lives and left more than 63 individuals wounded, was swiftly denounced by regional leaders like Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh.
Liido Beach, a popular spot for civilians, security officials, and businesspeople, was targeted by the al-Qaeda-affiliated terror group, al-Shabaab, claiming responsibility for the tragic incident. This attack came shortly after another blast in Jowhar, Hirshabele state, which claimed the lives of seven individuals and injured four others.
The United Nations in Somalia also strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing the abhorrent nature of targeting such a peaceful location. As Somalia continues to grapple with insecurity stemming from groups like al-Shabaab and ISIS, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has vowed to wage an “all-out war” against these terrorist elements.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.
