Instagram Users in Turkey Face Second Day of Blockade

Instagram users in Turkey are experiencing a second day of being unable to access the popular photo-sharing app, following accusations of censorship from a high-ranking government official. The BTK communications authority announced the block on its website without providing a specific reason, but Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu stated that Instagram had failed to comply with government requests to remove certain content.

President Erdogan’s communications director, Fahrettin Altun, accused Instagram of censoring posts related to the recent death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. While the official reason for the block remains unclear, an anonymous BTK source mentioned “insults to Ataturk” and other criminal activities as potential causes.

The move has sparked controversy, with opposition parties and legal professionals calling for the ban to be lifted. This latest incident adds to a trend of Turkish authorities restricting access to social media platforms, with Facebook and Wikipedia also facing blocks in the past. With 50 million Instagram users in the country, the ongoing blockade raises concerns about freedom of expression in Turkey.
