Instagram users in Turkey are facing a second day of blocked access to the social media platform following censorship accusations from a Turkish official. The BTK communications authority announced the freeze without reason, while Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu stated Instagram ignored government demands to remove certain posts.
Tensions rose when Instagram was accused of censoring posts about the Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, following his death in Tehran. Erdogan decreed a national day of mourning for the close ally of Turkey.
While an anonymous BTK source cited reasons such as insults to Ataturk and criminal activities for the block, opposition parties and the legal profession have petitioned for the ban to be lifted.
This is not the first time Turkey has blocked social media sites, with concerns over freedom of expression rising. With 50 million Instagram users in the country, the ongoing censorship debate remains a contentious issue.
