Former President Donald Trump has announced that he is pulling out of a scheduled September debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC, opting instead to face off on Fox News. This decision makes it increasingly unlikely that the candidates will have an opportunity to confront each other on stage before the November election.
Trump terminated his agreement to a Sept. 10 debate on ABC, citing the absence of Democratic President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the race after a disastrous first debate. The Republican nominee now plans to appear on Fox News on Sept. 4 with rules similar to his debate with Biden. If Harris does not agree to the new network and date, Trump will participate in a major Town Hall with Fox News.
Despite Trump’s decision, Harris remains committed to the time slot and will appear “one way or the other” to address a prime-time national audience. Trump’s back-and-forth on debating with Harris has been a topic of discussion since she entered the race.
In addition, Trump cited his ongoing litigation against ABC News as a conflict of interest, stemming from an accusation made by anchor George Stephanopoulos. Despite this, Trump had previously agreed to the Sept. 10 debate on ABC and the June 27 debate on CNN.
