Crowds swell in Bangladesh as protesters demand justice for those killed in demonstrations
Protesters in Bangladesh have flooded the streets to seek justice for the over 200 individuals who lost their lives during last month’s protests led by students demanding changes in the government job quota system.
The massive demonstrations took place as student leaders urged for a nationwide civil disobedience campaign, intensifying the pressure on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration.
The movement, which initially began over the controversial quota scheme that reserved more than half of government jobs for specific groups, has morphed into a broader public outcry with citizens from all backgrounds joining in solidarity on the streets.
Despite efforts by the government to initiate dialogue with protest leaders and appoint officials for negotiation, the momentum for change continues to rise with Students Against Discrimination announcing a non-cooperation movement.
The lethal crackdown by security forces on protesters has resulted in widespread condemnation from UN experts and international leaders, calling for accountability and an end to the violent suppression of dissent.
