Law enforcement authorities on Friday arrested a senior Russian lawmaker on accusations that he ordered the murder of his business partner. Russia’s Investigative Committee stated that Senator Dmitry Savelyev instructed his friend to organize the murder of a businessman in August 2023. The investigation revealed that Savelyev funded the operation after the staged murder, potentially facing life imprisonment as a consequence.
The dramatic event unfolded during the Federation Council’s session, as Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov unexpectedly appeared to request the stripping of Savelyev’s immunity. Subsequently, Savelyev was detained upon exiting the chamber based on allegations of paying $100,000 for a contract killing. The victim was identified as Savelyev’s business partner, who was accused of embezzlement and had served a previous prison term.
