Protesters in Sydney have rallied against the AUKUS Pact, rejecting plans for nuclear power reactors in Australia. Peter Murphy, convener of Sydney Anti-AUKUS Coalition, spoke out against the super-secret project between the US, Britain, and Australia to acquire nuclear-powered attack submarines and develop advanced weaponry.
The protesters gathered to commemorate victims of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, as well as all victims of nuclear war. They marched to Defense Plaza Sydney with banners denouncing the AUKUS Pact and nuclear submarines.
Dennis Doherty, co-ordinator of Sydney Anti-AUKUS Coalition, emphasized the harm that the nuclear industry and weapons pose to Australia. He stressed the importance of fostering friendly relations in the region and criticized the AUKUS Pact as a destabilizing move.
The rally aimed to raise awareness about the risks associated with nuclear submarines and the potential escalation of tensions in the region. The protesters reiterated their stance against nuclear weapons and called for the abandonment of the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal.
