Philippines reinforces South China Sea base for 10 years

The Philippines reinforced a grounded World War II-era ship in the South China Sea, extending its lifespan and escalating tensions with Beijing. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s government accelerated efforts to maintain the outpost on Second Thomas Shoal, defying Beijing’s claims in the region. Despite the challenges, resupply missions and confrontations with Chinese vessels continue to occur.

The Philippines occupies Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed area along with China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. Marcos’ administration has invited journalists to cover missions to the area and has strengthened ties with the US for defense. China opposes these actions, but a recent hotline agreement aims to ease tensions and facilitate smoother operations in the region.
