The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has expressed disappointment in the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its promise of assisting transporters in converting their buses to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) following the removal of petrol subsidy on May 29, 2023. Despite initial plans for a gradual conversion process starting with 1,000 buses, the NURTW advocated for a larger fleet of 10,000 buses to minimize the impact of the subsidy removal.
However, President Bola Tinubu’s bold decision to end the petrol subsidy regime led to a significant increase in petrol prices, prompting the introduction of the Presidential CNG Initiative in October 2023. The initiative aims to promote safer, more affordable, and eco-friendly energy solutions by rolling out 5,500 CNG buses, 100 electric buses, and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits.
Despite delays and issues in the distribution process, the Presidency announced plans to launch 2,700 CNG-powered buses and tricycles before President Tinubu’s first anniversary in office. This initiative signifies Nigeria’s step towards adopting CNG vehicles and improving the country’s energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
