Neturei Karta Rabbis Attend Funeral of Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar
Rabbis from the anti-Zionist Jewish movement “Neturei Karta” made headlines by attending the funeral of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Doha, Qatar. Haniyeh was laid to rest in the Imam Foundation Cemetery after being assassinated in Tehran, with Israel being blamed for the attack.
Neturei Karta, known for their stance against Zionism, condemned Haniyeh’s assassination and reiterated their belief that Zionism does not represent Judaism. The orthodox Jewish rabbis were seen at the funeral holding signs that read “Jews are not Zionists,” emphasizing their opposition to the ideology.
The movement recalled a historical visit to Gaza in 2009 where they met with Haniyeh, discussing their shared goal of peace and the Jewish opposition to Zionism. Despite differences, Haniyeh acknowledged the distinction between Zionism and Judaism, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.
While the assassination has sparked tensions, Neturei Karta extended its condolences to Haniyeh’s family and all victims in Palestine, urging for an end to the cycle of violence.
Neturei Karta’s presence at the funeral serves as a powerful reminder of the diversity of voices within the Jewish community and their commitment to advocating for peace and justice.
