Khalid Sheikh Mohammed agrees to deal as Al-Qaida terrorist of 9/11 | Politics

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks, has reportedly agreed to a deal with the US Department of Defense. The Pentagon has not disclosed the exact terms of the agreements made with two other accomplices of the terrorist.

According to a report by the New York Times, the three men have agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence instead of the death penalty. Originally, Mohammed had stated his intention to die as a martyr. This deal comes 21 years after his arrest in Pakistan.

Background: 23 years ago, Islamists flew two planes into the World Trade Center in New York, causing almost 3000 deaths. It was the deadliest attack in US history, traumatizing the nation. On May 2, 2011, Elite Soldier Robert J. O’Neill killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden during a US secret operation in Pakistan.

After the deal, many families of the victims demanded an official admission of guilt from the men, although Pentagon officials refuse to disclose details of the deal.

In the 2008 military trial for the September 11 attacks, Sheikh Mohammed and four other defendants pleaded guilty. He has been held in Guantanamo Bay prison since then.

In the 2008 pre-trial hearing, Military Judge Stephen Henley announced that the defendants wanted to waive all defense motions and confess. When asked if he wanted to plead guilty, Sheikh Mohammed replied, “Yes, we do not want to waste time.” Now, 21 years after his arrest, the US Justice system has reached a deal with the top terrorist.
