Kampala’s main trade lobby, Kacita, initiated a strike resulting in shop closures, but some members are now resuming business amid pressure to end the protest. Originally planned for five to six days, cracks in the strike emerged as the government and stakeholders pushed for a swift resolution. Despite an official stance to keep shops closed until a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni, some businesses have reopened. Kacita spokesperson Issa Sekitto highlighted resistance due to financial implications for members, but reiterated the importance of collective action.

Key Issues

Traders seek suspension of the Electronic Receipting and Invoicing System, revision of taxes on textile products, and restrictions on Chinese nationals in retail. Minister Chris Baryomunsi advised traders to remain calm, emphasizing the need for dialogue.
