Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared that Israel will face severe consequences for the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh. According to the IRGC, Haniyeh was killed by a short-range projectile launched at his residence in Tehran.
The IRGC stated that Israel will be punished for the assassination, which it claims had the support of the United States. While Israel has not confirmed its involvement, the US denies any connection. The assassination has escalated tensions in the Middle East, with Israel’s continuous conflict in Gaza.
Haniyeh’s funeral was held in Doha, Qatar, after which top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was also killed in an Israeli air attack in Beirut. Iran expects Hezbollah to retaliate deeper inside Israel following Shukr’s death.
The ongoing war in Gaza has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions, leading to a famine in the enclave. Ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel have been ongoing to end the violence and release prisoners.
