Bangladesh Student Leaders Call for Civil Disobedience

Student leaders in Bangladesh have launched a nationwide civil disobedience campaign following a deadly police crackdown on protesters. The unrest began over civil service job quotas and escalated into violent clashes resulting in over 200 deaths.

Despite troop deployments to restore order, large crowds took to the streets in response to calls by student leaders for further concessions from the government. The group, Students Against Discrimination, urged citizens to engage in non-cooperation activities such as withholding taxes and utility payments.

The demands include a public apology from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the dismissal of government ministers, and the reopening of schools and universities. Protesters are also calling for Hasina to step down from office.

Hasina, who has been in power since 2009, offered to enter into dialogue with the students to address their grievances. However, the students rejected the offer, signaling a continued push for change in the country.
