Armenia’s Plans for the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant
The Armenian government is making significant moves to extend the operational life of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, located just 10 miles from the Turkish border, until 2036. Reports state that Russia’s Rosatom has already begun work on extending the life of the plant, with plans to add a new energy block nearby.
Furthermore, discussions are ongoing with various countries, including the US, Russia, South Korea, China, and France, regarding the construction of a new plant. An unnamed US company has even started a feasibility study for a small modular nuclear power plant in Armenia, tailored to the country’s needs.
Representatives from the French nuclear reactor company Framatome have also visited Armenia recently to discuss potential collaborations. The outdated plant near the Turkish border, with two reactors commissioned in the 1970s and 1980s, has been undergoing renovations to extend its operational life.
With plans for a new nuclear reactor at the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in the works, Armenia is poised to secure its energy future for years to come.
