The US Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission have filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance for allegedly failing to protect children’s privacy on the social media app. The government claims that TikTok violated a law prohibiting the collection of personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.
The Justice Department alleges that TikTok knowingly allowed children to create accounts and share content with adults without obtaining parental consent. TikTok collected personal information from these children without proper consent.
In response to the lawsuit, TikTok CEO denied any ties to China’s Communist Party in a heated exchange with a US senator. The platform is currently facing legal challenges around the world regarding its data privacy practices and may be forced to divest its US assets.
The company has also faced fines in the EU and UK for mishandling children’s data. As the government considers expanding privacy protections for teenagers, it remains to be seen how TikTok will address these concerns moving forward.
