US Alleges TikTok Violated Children’s Privacy Laws
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against TikTok and parent company ByteDance for allegedly violating children’s privacy laws. The government claims TikTok failed to protect the personal data of millions of American children under 13, in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The lawsuit is part of ongoing concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and potential ties to the Chinese government. TikTok denies the allegations, stating they have made efforts to protect children’s privacy on the platform.
The lawsuit, also supported by the Federal Trade Commission, aims to stop TikTok’s alleged invasion of children’s privacy and seeks penalties for improper data collection. This comes after previous fines in the EU and UK over similar concerns.
In response to the lawsuit, the US Senate has passed a bill to extend COPPA protections to teenagers up to age 17 and restrict targeted advertising to minors. The bill still needs approval from the House of Representatives to become law.
