US backs opposition candidate as victor in Venezuela election | Global

The United States has officially recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as the rightful winner of the recent Venezuelan election, calling for a transition process to begin. Despite the government declaring Nicolás Maduro the winner, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that González Urrutia received the most votes, supported by evidence from polling stations. This declaration has been the strongest criticism from Washington yet, condemning the lack of transparency in the election process.

The lack of official precinct-level results has sparked protests and skepticism regarding the validity of Maduro’s victory, with even international organizations denouncing the election as undemocratic. The Carter Center, among others, has voiced concerns over the transparency of the process.

Furthermore, Blinken condemned threats against opposition leaders, urging other countries to recognize González Urrutia as the true winner. The G7 also called for transparency and restraint in dealing with protests in Venezuela.

The situation in Venezuela continues to unfold, with millions fleeing the country and seeking refuge elsewhere. The ongoing political turmoil highlights the importance of fair and transparent electoral processes.
