Washington recently lauded the courageous efforts of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in diversifying the country’s relationships, particularly with Russia. The US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien, noted that the United States is actively working to support Armenia in reducing its reliance on Russia and fostering a stronger partnership with the US and the EU.
In a recent Senate Committee hearing, O’Brien emphasized the need for Armenia to move away from its heavy dependence on Russia, especially in energy and economy sectors. The US has pledged to assist Armenia in trade, military affairs, judicial reforms, and democracy building.
Armenia’s decision to elevate its relationship with the US to a “strategic partnership” was accompanied by Prime Minister Pashinyan’s announcement of withdrawing from the Russia-led CSTO. This move showcases Armenia’s shift towards closer ties with the US and the EU, drawing both support and criticism from various parties.
As tensions rise in the Caucasus region, geopolitical calculations by global powers, including the EU and NATO, are being closely monitored by Russia, who views such moves as threats to regional stability.
