The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has expressed serious concerns about the increasing number of abductions in the greater Yei region of Central Equatoria state, reportedly carried out by the National Salvation Front (NAS) and other armed groups. Last month alone, there were 12 reported cases affecting 134 individuals, including six children.
The abduction of children puts them at risk of recruitment into armed conflicts, sexual violence, trafficking, and other forms of exploitation. UNMISS is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals held captive, emphasizing the violation of human rights and the humanitarian impact on communities.
Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, is urging the Government of South Sudan to investigate these incidents and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable. Collective action by stakeholders, including the government, is needed to strengthen prevention measures and bring swift justice.
Abductions continue to pose a threat to security and peacebuilding efforts in the region. UNMISS is collaborating with national, state, and local authorities to address this issue and protect the population from further harm.
