Following accusations of censorship by a top government official, Turkey has blocked access to Instagram, citing concerns over the platform’s handling of Hamas-related content. The move comes after comments from the Turkish presidency’s communications director, Fahrettin Altun, criticizing Instagram for blocking condolence posts on the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Altun called the censorship “pure and simple,” emphasizing a commitment to defending freedom of expression. The decision to block Instagram, affecting over 50 million users in Turkey, has sparked backlash on social media, with many expressing frustration over the sudden restriction.
Digital law expert Yaman Akdeniz criticized the arbitrary nature of the censorship, questioning the justification behind the ban. The issue has led to mockery on various platforms, with memes and sarcastic comments circulating online.
There has been no response from Meta Platforms Inc, the company that owns Instagram, regarding the ban or the accusations made by Turkish officials.
