US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has declared overwhelming evidence that Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won the recent presidential election, despite incumbent president Nicolas Maduro claiming victory.
Blinken’s statement follows calls from other country leaders for Venezuela to release full election details, as the government-controlled electoral council announced Maduro’s win for a third term, sparking widespread dispute.
The opposition, backed by opinion polls, contests the results and demands transparency, leading to violent protests in Caracas. While some countries have recognized Maduro’s win, the US and EU urge for data release and a peaceful transition based on the will of the Venezuelan people.
